EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the action was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
