British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
