Minister Says MoD Examining Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, as Personnel Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defence minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the possible security risks associated with Chinese-made cars, while staff have been told to avoid discussing secret matters in any vehicles.

Security Advice for MoD Staff

In a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss classified material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

The minister said that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but emphasised that security is a issue in every contemporary cars.

We have a collection of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret classification in any car, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Security Context

This revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

This wider security situation highlights the significance of robust measures and caution in all aspects of government activities, from vehicle usage to communication practices.
