A recent study reveals that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such medications need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
