Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a major prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand for introducing fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
