Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Officers say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then found many other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement state initial examinations suggest the substance was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; officials are currently not informed of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have asked to the public for tips.
A high-ranking official said the incident left him without words and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist attack five years ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at people of immigrant origin in 2020.
